The story so far
When I was 12 years old, I started playing around with Adobe Photoshop, creating community graphics for online games. I continued to design, taking on small commissions until I enrolled on a BA Graphic Design degree in 2012 and graduated from Leeds Art University in 2014.
It was my internship at a digital agency in Barcelona that properly kickstarted my career. After the internship, I secured the junior design role. I began attending design conferences and talks to stay up-to-date on the digital design industry. I believe it's important to look beyond your immediate world for inspiration and ideas and to follow those who are shaping the industry.
In 2017, I moved to London and joined TwelfthMan, a creative agency in the sports industry. There, I gained experience working with larger brands and executing designs across digital platforms.
In 2019, I moved to Melbourne and began working at AKQA, where I honed my skills working with bigger clients, more creative work, and the best people. It was in Melbourne that I transitioned into product design, working at Belong, an independent child brand of Telstra. I learned to apply my creative skills through a product lens, creating designs that were useful, functional, and aesthetically pleasing, and I became increasingly focused on the end user and meeting the needs of a target audience.
After returning to the UK in 2020, I started freelancing just as the pandemic hit and the country went into lockdown. I worked remotely for several creative agencies before settling at The Times for a while, where I gained experience working with large product teams and collaborating with the internal design system team. I had the opportunity to work and expand my knowledge of testing methodologies while mentoring junior members of the team.
In September 2021, I began a new role at John Lewis, where I currently work. Initially, I was part of the product teams, working on search, recommendations, digital merchandising, and global navigation. However, after a company-wide brand refresh in mid-2022, I joined the design system team as the third member. I took on the responsibility of building a new design system from scratch, working under a lead designer. I currently help contribute to key daily decisions while tackling new business challenges. In addition to hands-on design work, I also mentor other designers in the group and contribute to group strategy and product vision.
